Movie-Inspired Software Can Give Any Phone Pressure-Sensing Abilities

Inspired by Batman movie scene, developers are using speakers and microphones to sense touch

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus brought some new and exciting innovations to the phone technology world. Among the most exciting was the 3D Force Touch, which gives users the ability to designate specific actions on the phone according to the amount of pressure applied to the screen. But that wasn’t enough for a few engineers at the University of Michigan. They wanted pressure-sensing technology for more phones than just the iPhone, and they also wanted to bring that touch sensitivity into more than just the screen—and they say they got the entire idea from The Dark Knight, a 2008 Batman film starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.
