Marchesa designers and IBM Watson creates the #MetGala Cognitive Dress

While some celebrities arrived to the Met Gala donning a gown designed by Oscar de la Renta or Givenchy, model Karolina Kurkova arrived in a robot-inspired art. Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig teamed up with cognitive computing system, IBM Watson, to create a smart dress known as the Cognitive Dress.

Marchesa worked with Watson, whose system uses language processing to ingest and analyze data in a natural way, to help shape the processes of how it was made. The designers provided Watson with hundreds of images of past designs, and chose five sentiments the dress should express to help it land on a color that would best reflect the brand. After deciding upon the color palette, IBM used seven total services to choose the perfect fabric, including concept tagging and keyword extraction to weigh in on various materials.
