Visa Gives Olympic Athletes A Contactless Payment Ring
The device works at NFC-enabled terminals and will be tested at Rio 2016
As the exclusive payment provider at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Visa provided its sponsored athletes with a contactless payment ring. In order to make a purchase in any of the stadiums, press centers, or inside the Olympic Village or Olympic Superstores, Team Visa athletes simply tap their ring to NFC enabled payment terminals.
The ring was designed by McLear & Co and includes a secure microchip made by Gemalto and NFC-enabled antenna which facilitate the payments. It comes with a battery and therefore does not require charging. For added security, the ring uses Visa’s Token Service which replaces sensitive account information with a digital identifier. The small form factor brings added convenience for Team Visa Athletes like Missy Franklin, Carli Lloyd, and Ashton Eaton.
