The functional sculpture offers a new take on locomotion

Design studio Carv came up with an interesting functional sculpture: a bike with hind wheels that mimic a spider’s crawl.

The bike takes steps like a cautious arachnid when pedaled. Four legs take the place of the rear wheel, moving in perfect sync with every kick. While there is no apparent advantage to using legs instead of wheels, it does create a wonderful mechanical display.

The design studio entered their contraption to the full steam punk glory at the Santa Barbara Solstice Parade where the group says it was met with a lot of enthusiasm. Toxel.com reports that the spider bike was originally inspired by Theon Jansen’s Strandbeest.
