Nest’s Outdoor Camera Lets You Keep An Eye On The World
The connected device gives homeowners a suite of tools to expand their security perimeter
The customer videos on the Nest website will make your skin crawl. High-def sequences of guys in hoodies kicking in doors, rummaging through houses, running from surprised homeowners, all captured by the Nest Cam. The videos all have one thing in common, though: they depict burglars already in the house. Wouldn’t it be better to spot people as they approach and maybe warn them away? That’s the idea behind Nest Cam Outdoor, the latest product from “thoughtful home” company Nest Labs.
Like its indoor predecessor, Nest Cam Outdoor is an inexpensive home security camera that streams high-definition (1080p) video to a cell phone equipped with the Nest app. It delivers text alerts when it senses unusual motion, and even has a microphone and speaker so the user can listen or talk through the camera. (One of the creepy videos on the site shows a homeowner scaring burglars away by yelling at them over the speaker.)
This version of the camera, however, is weatherproof for outdoor use, and offers night vision capability as well.
Users can rely on the camera itself for protection, checking in when necessary, but the Nest Aware plan allows continuous 24/7 recording, with the videos stored in the cloud for up to 30 days.
“Nest Cam Outdoor brings thoughtful security outside of customers’ homes, helping them secure their property and giving them more ways to watch over their families, even when they’re miles away,” says Maxime Veron of Nest.
Nest Cam Outdoor is currently available for preorder, and Nest expects it to be available in the fall. A single Nest Cam costs $199 and comes with a free Nest Aware trial plan. Nest Aware offers plans for $10 and $30 per month, depending on how long footage is stored in the cloud.
