Warm burritos will be carried from food trucks to Virginia Tech students to test accuracy of self-guided navigation systems

Google’s parent company Alphabet is partnering with restaurant chain Chipotle to start testing burrito deliveries by drone on Virginia Tech’s campus. The project comes from Alphabet’s Project Wing, and is one of the first commercial drone delivery programs that’s been approved by the US Federal Aviation Authority. The pilot will use self-guided hybrid drones that can fly like a plane or hover like a helicopter, making deliveries from a Chipotle food truck.

Why burritos? Fresh food is one of the more complex things to transport via drone, and Project Wing wants to test the accuracy of navigation systems as well as how people respond to these futuristic deliveries. Currently, the pilot’s planned for students on-campus, but perhaps someday we’ll all be getting our burritos via drone delivery.
