An artist let the ocean wash over light-sensitive paper to create a mesmerizing series of images

Artist Meghann Riepenhoff has created a series of gorgeous photos called Littoral Drift, made from the sea. To create them, Riepenhoff submerged light-sensitive paper into the ocean, and let nature shape the images produced. The result is a mesmerizing series that evoke the changing sea.

To create the series, Riepenhoff came up with a spin on the classic photo technique of cyanotypes, which exposes papers coated with iron and potassium ferrocyanide to light, creating vibrant blue prints. Rather than develop the photos in a darkroom, however, the artist carried a few sheets of cyanotype paper to the beach.  She repeated the process until she perfected the method:
