In the Future of Work report, PSFK shares the importance of empowering employees to pursue projects of their choice
Top-tier companies that excel in their field are constantly in the process of delivering not only the best goods and services, but also researching innovations and defining new opportunities for growth. As employees at any level can spur an excellent idea for innovation, an organization can look to foster these ideas by creating programs and processes that encourage intrapreneurship.
In the new Future of Work report from PSFK Labs, the team digs deeper into how organisations can harness dormant innovations and involve all employees in corporate growth. Creating an environment where employees perform their duties while also feeling supported in pursuing passion projects will ultimately lead to more creative thinking across the board.
“[Employees tend to] think innovation is somebody else’s job. Innovation is everyone’s job,” Stephen Garguilo, Senior Manager of Creative Engagement at Johnson & Johnson, told PSFK.
Organizations should look to create programs that offers all employees the opportunity to contribute ideas in a creative and safe manner. One company that has successfully created an internal platform for sharing ideas is the professional social network LinkedIn. Every quarter, all employees have the opportunity to pitch personal ideas for the company to the executive team through their [In]cubator initiative. When an idea gets approved, the team gets up to three months to focus on the project with financial support and substantial support from mentors. The initiative has promoted more freedom for experimental thinking and teamwork among employees, as well as having uncovered a multitude of innovative ideas for improvement.
Elliot Shmukler, VP or Product at Instacart explains, “[Employees want to] be both ambitious and autonomous…and everyone wants to see their ideas come to life.”
Organizations can and should take the time to reflect on how it can develop seamless programs and processes that create innovative opportunities for employees. Cultivating a culture of openness and growth will generate employee-led innovations that can turn into valuable company assets and future products.
