Our Future of Work vision is an app that frees employees from the tyranny of a static desk
We’ve all felt it: the symbolic ball and chain keeping us tethered to our desk. It’s presence so prevailing you needn’t replace it with the real thing. It is precisely for that reason that despite serving as a universal symbol for work, the work desk as we’ve come to know it is at odds with the Future of Work. Our latest report by PSFK Labs, for instance, foresees a dynamic vision for ‘the desk,’ one where flexibility, socialization, collaboration, and perhaps monotony’s greatest adversary, a change of scenery, feature as key characteristics.
Inspired by the 10 strategies to develop a new era of internal leadership found inside the Future of Work report, PSFK will present boundary-pushing product and workplace visions to reimagine how teams can onboard employees, expand the office, and prevent miscommunication.
Through the Nomad Desk App, employees can reserve desk space at different office locations or adjoining cafés and workspaces—no longer condemned to a stationary and static work life. As we all so acutely know, traditional office siting arrangements tend to limit spontaneous interaction and collaboration outside of perhaps those colleagues situated in immediate proximity. On the other hand, when less conventional seating arrangements are introduced, such as neighboring businesses or secluded work spaces in-house, it becomes difficult to locate a coworker when needed.
The solution: an app that ensures a more dynamic workplace by allowing users to reserve desk space at different office locations or neighboring cafés and workspaces.
App users can find where their colleagues are at all times, view specific roles of surrounding users and meet new colleagues through a seat roulette feature. Nomad Desk promotes socializing and the forming of new connections, which help in the generation of new ideas and innovation where before they might not have arisen.
The tracking technology would work as follows:
- Nomad Desk access cards come equipped with RFID/GPS technology
- Desks, conference rooms and work spaces are also outfitted with RFID tags. These tags interact with access cards so as to register employees at various locations
- The app reveals an office map which is searchable for specific employees and their location; it can also be used outside the office, whether in a nearby cafe restaurant, library or coworking space.
Just imagine: the desk no longer as a docking station but as a network of satellites to which employees can flock to for solace, inspiration, collaboration, sunshine even, all while ensuring company communication never suffers. The figurative ball and chain is no more. In its place: freedom.
