Christmas Lobby Receives A Minimalist Apple Design Treatment
Jony Ives decks the halls of Claridge's...with no decorations
The tradition at Claridge’s, the high-end hotel in London, is to have iconic designers treat their lobby in fine Christmas regalia. Christopher Bailey for Burberry, John Galliano for Dior, and Kally Ellis for McQueens to name a few.
This year, Apple design guru Jony Ives, along with fellow designer Mark Newson, put their spin on trimming a tree, which was actually to not do it. Instead, Ives used the natural beauty of the bare trees to create a winter scene with fake snow and a fir canopy.
The installation includes a lighting scheme and nature sounds that transport the viewer to an outdoor setting. Perhaps this is the hallmark of a new design aesthetic for the holidays: modern, natural, unencumbered.
