The world’s largest cruise company Carnival has recently announced the launch of a novel “wearable concierge service” designed to improve the coasting experience. The Ocean Medallion wearable will reportedly operate as a room key, tap-to-order room service, restaurant reservation check-in, portable mini-game console and personalized entertainment experience. Powered by proprietary technology developed in-house with help from engineering consultation firm Nytec, the digital concierge device syncs with an IoT network of intelligent sensors (formally known as xiOS) and weighs in at 1.8 ounces with a quarter-sized screen estate.

In addition to streamlining the embarking and departing process, alongside the various aforementioned utilities, the wearable will also enable family members to keep track of one another in the event of an emergency or someone getting lost onboard the ship. The Ocean Medallion wearable will pair with an optional personalized ‘digital concierge’ dubbed the Ocean Compass, an online portal available on smart devices, home port kiosks, stateroom TV’s and interactive displays scattered throughout the various cruise ships. The experiential computing capabilities will first debut on Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess in November 2017, followed by the Royal Princess and Caribbean Princes sometime in 2018.

In line with the enterprise’s hardware announcements, Carnival has also announced the launch of OCEAN, which stands for One Cruise Experience Access Network, an innovative collection of original experiential media, brand new TV programs airing nationally and additional sailing destinations exclusive to the company. Packaged under the Ocean Compass, guests will have access to these experiences regardless of whether or not they own an Ocean Medallion wearable and will also have access to vacation photos captured during the cruise.

Each Ocean Medallion wearable will feature its owner’s name and date of sailing laser-etched on the back, gifted to wearers at no extra cost. The smartwatch will be manufactured with multiple communication technologies baked in, including Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Near Field Communication (NFC). The chips will help facilitate point-to-point wayfinding aboard each cruise (similar to standard GPS apps), food and beverage orders at any location within the ship and seamless payment through “Medallion Pay,” which supports an unlimited slot amount of credit cards, gift cards, reward cars and advanced payment services such as Apple Pay or PayPal. Working in tandem, the new lines of offerings will promote a universal language of offerings to enrich the overall guest experience.
