Trends and innovation reports have been talking about the rising power of the consumer since the emergence of digital media; today, it can be surprising to consider how far this shift has developed. In some areas of daily life, we expected a balancing of power between people and organizations (business, government and so on)—but in more and more verticals we forecast a significant shift where the consumer takes control by acting like, or even replacing, the organizations that traditionally provide products, services and messages.

In some ways, people will become platforms of business—their physical and digital personas will become the stores for others to buy from, or the factories where things are made. They’ll become the portal to health and wellness and will influence the community by assuming political responsibility.

The democratization of technology—AI, IoT and biometric tools in particular—are agents for a real power shift, allowing individual users to modify their surroundings, their lifestyles and even their supply chains with less dependency on brands or governments.

It’s important that we all understand this shift and adapt our products and services so that we can further empower people. By doing so, we’ll endear them to us and they will, in turn, help us help them.
