Startup Forward’s agency, dubbed the ‘doctor’s office of the future,’ promises to learn about you over time with the internet of things, administering custom health benefits and leading the medical care transformation from our current reactive approach towards a more preventative one. The Bay Area-based flagship, a state-of-the-art 3,500 square foot layout with six exam rooms decked out in the latest medical instruments and an onsite lab for running tests in-office reads ‘Design Your Health’ in bold blue letters along the wall.

Blending artificially intelligent systems with various connected tools, the company’s tech solutions will help expedite a trip to the doctor as healthcare professionals will be able to quickly source medical information for comparison with your health data. For checkups, the space will be equipped with a proprietary digital stethoscope, strong enough to hear your heartbeat without you needing to remove your shirt, alongside an infrared light that’ll reveal your veins when they’ll need to sample some blood. In the lobby, a large body scanner will ask you to place two of your left middle fingers into a sensor for a few seconds, calculating metrics such as height, weight, body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate which will all sync back with the A.I. and mobile app.

But the company isn’t only redesigning what a trip to the clinic will look and feel like, its helping to democratize healthcare moving forward. In the wake of nearly 20 million Americans losing their insurance with the dissipation of the Afffordable Care Act, roughly 15 percent of Forward’s early adopters consists of underserved communities. An alternative payment method to that of the traditional insurance plan and co-pay will provide visitors with unlimited access to 24/7 access to medical staff (either by regular appointment during work hours or the accompanying app when out-of-office), baseline screening, wellness and nutrition counseling, blood and genetic testing, and a wearable provided by the clinic for ongoing medical monitoring, all for a monthly fee of $149 USD. Each member will also get their first month of prescription medication free of charge.

With Medical Debt regarded as the biggest contributor to debt within the US – mostly due to the high cost of our medical system—the field has been due for a large market disruptor for quite some time. If the company’s ex-Google founder Adrian Aoun plays his cards right, he can effectively facilitate that transformation with Forward at center. In addition to all the benefits included in the monthly fee, Aoun also plans to offer a diverse set of wearbles, vitamins and other supplements in the space’s onsite pharmacy. He’ll be balancing his efforts to deepening the company’s catalogue while doubly focusing on expanding into additional locations.
