While the New York Public Library (NYPL) is based in New York City, it serves a global audience of researchers and tourists with over 18 million visitors yearly. It is the home of thousands of rare books, manuscripts, maps and photographs that spark the imagination of a vastly diverse population. In partnership with Macmillan, the library will be publishing works inspired by the institution’s extensive collection.

NYPL and the publisher are planning on using the vast collection of books the library holds as a source of material for five to eight books a year that celebrate the role of libraries in the public sphere. The first book scheduled to be released next year will be an adult book by Maria Kalman, the author of The Principles of Uncertainty.

Also planned for the project is a book about New York restaurant life that is based on 45,000 menus that live at NYPL, a book based on the BookFace Instagram account, a coloring book called Coloring in the Lions which is a nod to the two lion statues that welcome visitors at the NYPL’s Fifth Avenue location, and a YA novel based on the true story of a family that lived in the library.

Money raised from the partnership will go directly towards funding library services that have faced increased pressure over the last few years.
