The tradition of PSFK trekking around Manhattan to find the most visually interesting holiday windows is back again for Holiday 2016. This is probably the tenth year or so we’ve shared our picks with you. We never know what we’ll find so we scour the blocks along Madison, Fifth Ave and Soho looking for the most eye-catching and creative windows out there.

2016, honestly, was a pretty thin year for really good examples. We’ve seen this happen in NYC before where retailers collectively take a break, and this year was the same. So we ended up with a batch that reflects quality more so than quantity. Each of these got PSFK’s attention and that of most passersby.

(in alphabetical order)

ABC Carpet and Home – 888 Broadway

Celebrating a theme around the concept of ‘WE’, ABC’s windows were more visually sedate this year than in the past. But there was still no shortage of things to look at. Several of the windows incorporated collages of furniture, objects and toys reflective of the ‘togetherness’ messages applied on the walls.

Anthropologie – Rockefeller Center

The cronic-crafting team at Anthropologie presented snowflakes in an array of different styles using only paper for their NYC flagship store display. There’s everything from technical blueprint drawings to hundreds of elaborate cutout snowflakes.

Barneys – 660 Madison Ave

The #LovePeaceJoyProject windows celebrate the Barneys New York Foundation, a charitable organization the retailer launched in early 2016. Historically known for inviting collaborators to help with their holiday windows each year, Barneys invited South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, artist Nick Cave, Studio Job, and Brooklyn artist Rob Pruitt to each design a window. The windows aim to encourage people to participate in Barneys’ #LovePeaceJoy photography project and spread awareness for their two selected charities, STYLEFUND and the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation.

Bergdorf-Goodman – 754 5th Ave.

Destination Extraordinary” is the theme of Bergdorf’s typically amazing holiday windows. Each of the panes reflects an idealized take on an animal habitat and were inspired by Henri Rousseau paintings and the dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History. The windows took six months to create and feature gorillas and monkeys, insects, aquatic animals, a giant desert rabbit and an array of birds.

Club Monaco – 160 5th Ave

Club Monaco’s larger corner windows, located on 5th Ave near the Flatiron, have been filled with musical instruments and plastic champagne glasses for past holiday window creations. This year, mannequins were backed by enormous boxwood hedges.

Hermès – 691 Madison Ave

In years past, Hermès has staged some of the most art installation-like holiday windows anywhere. For 2016, the luxury leather-good maker went for a minimalist advent calendar complete with animated neon signs. The windows are very spare at first glance but reveal some quirky details upon closer look.
