Intuition Robotics has created an AI device to help older people with their daily lives to make living independently easier

Growing old can mean losing a sense of independence as some responsibilities—even just keeping track of daily tasks—become more complicated. Swooping into the rescue, Israeli start up Intuition Robotics created ElliQ, a robot to provide senior citizens with a social companion dedicated to improving their lifestyles and keeping them active. This robot closely resembles the design of a lamp ample for sitting on a nightstand or desk. The designers have equipped it with artificial intelligence to progressively learn about owners.

ElliQ comes with a large display screen the AI can access to display notifications it receives and a speaker so it can communication to the owners. A voice recognition software requires the owner’s verbal response to go to the next step, rather than touching the display to dismiss an item. The same goes for reminders the user can program into ElliQ for events during the day or medication doses the owner needs.

The robots were designed to give the elderly a piece of technology they could rely on and accessibly interact with it on a daily basis. Another way to help with this was giving the device the ability to move its upper section back and forth, similarly to the movement of a person’s head. In the center of ElliQ sits a light that activates as the device speaks to the owner. Combining these two elements enables the devices to convey a simple level of emotion.

Over time, the AI develops a rapport with their owner in order to better understand their needs. If the owner uses particular digital content such as audio books or music, the device will suggest to play these as the owner is walking around the house. If a new piece of content is released in their favored category, ElliQ notifies the owner and asks if they would like to listen to it. The same goes for owners who enjoy outdoor activities or planning events with family members.

Intuition Robotics are creating a waiting list via their newsletter for those interested in purchasing the device.
