Honest Few is a startup that lets people channel their inner bookworm by getting rewarded for social promotion

Though there’s something to be said for the experience of holding a physical book in your hand, Kindle sales, Amazon Prime reading and the multitude of e-book libraries available on the web suggest that digital texts account for much of the world’s reading. To that effect, startup Honest Few looks to offer free titles on classics and best sellers online using social media as a vehicle for promotion. Predicated on the notion that your wallet shouldn’t have to take a hit just because you’re a bookworm, a tweet or status sharing a link back to the site is all it takes to unlock adventures once shrouded in account logins and paywalls.

Though gaming the system is easy in the sense that the company doesn’t check to see whether or not your tweet or status actually promotes their service (since you have to go through the site for the platform to know you’re talking about it rather than hashtagging your mention), there’s no reason not to help the free e-book service out a little by spreading the word. The site also pairs each book with a bio on its respective author, highlighting key elements of the plot, why the writer thinks you’ll like the book and some additional background information regarding their life and work. Of course, you can choose to purchase the e-book, though it’s not anticipated that many people will do so.

The idea of swapping a social media service for a particular good or service isn’t a new one (think: design ‘freebies’ like fonts and graphics), but with the expansive list of books available online, Honest Few is worth looking into if you like to have an archive of titles available in your pocket. But perhaps the most valuable lesson to be had from this digital library isn’t how easy it is to get your hands on a good read nowadays, but rather how valuable your social media pages are if put to good use.
