Developed by Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design graduate Bjørn Karmann, the Objectifier is a camera you embed in any electronic device to control it through various customizable gestures. Synced to a smartphone app, the camera lets you ‘train’ household items to respond to particular motions—clap to turn the lights on or snap your fingers to get the kettle started.

“It gives an experience of training an artificial intelligence; a shift from a passive consumer to an active, playful director of domestic technology,” says Karmann. “People will be able to experience new interactive ways to control objects, building a creative relationship with technology without any programming knowledge.”

While the technology has been around for a while, Microsoft tried to port its Kinect sensors to the smart home industry without much success, the Nintendo Wii operated in much the same way, and the Room-E and Interactive Light concepts played around with home-controlled interfaces like rotating a pepper shaker to change the volume on a stereo—the Objectifier manages to distinguish itself from preceding technologies by offering deeper personalization, and promising to smarten devices that came before the looming Internet of Things era.

And though the technology certainly helps on that front, there’s still the issue of scale: while Karmann has definitely invented an intelligent and practical household solution, consumers would have to buy tens of Objectifiers to make every plugged-in device in their home gesturally responsive. Plus, as with all machine learning platforms, the computer has a learning curve before it really kicks into full gear. In short, while the device follows the trend of upgrading preexisting devices rather than buying their smart-whatever counterpart, your pockets will have to run as deep as your patience if you actually want to wave your hand to cook eggs, point to start your magic bullet and peace-sign your speakers to shuffle your song selection.
