Ocado is evaluating whether shopping orders could be packed entirely by robots

Online supermarket Ocado has been testing out robots for picking and packing shopping orders inside its warehouses through the SoMa project. This research project, funded by the European Union, is a collaboration between Ocado Technology, a number of European universities, and Disney Research Zurich.

SoMa aims to design robotic hands that can handle fragile objects without needing detailed knowledge about their shape. To avoid damaging sensitive items, the project uses a compliant gripper in conjunction with an industrial robot arm.
