The Cinépolis has created Junior theaters to make the movie watching experience more active for children with playground equipment

It's no surprise that cinemas have been fighting an uphill battle to reel in customers back to the silver screen. To help allure cinema goers, some theaters have introduced reclining chairs for a more relaxing experience, while others have created innovative food and drink options for consumers to enjoy during a film. Taking this to a whole other level, Cinépolis, a Mexican theater chain, has designed select theaters in the US with playground equipment children can enjoy during a movie.

Why target families? Simply put, because children-friendly movies normally rank as the highest-grossing films each year, making this an ideal target audience. Naturally, many parents struggle with their children's restlessness during films which means they can rarely sit still to watch the film. Adding playground equipment therefore helps to provide an outlet for the children.

Aptly named, Cinépolis calls these cinemas ‘Junior' theaters. As a way for children and adults to connect while watching for a movie, they provide an opportunity for the children to release any pent-up energy. The company has already opened Junior theaters in Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Spain.

The playground equipment will vary from a parked pogo stick called the Wobble Hopper, colorful beanbag chairs, fenced-in play areas, a merry-go-round, tire chamber and two slides. These select theater rooms will only feature children-friendly movies.

The Cinépolis will open their Junior theaters in San Diego and Los Angeles, California on March 16. Parents interested in trying out this type of theater with their kids can expect to pay an additional $3 for the ticket.
