The store in Greenwich will not only sell their normal goods, but also launch sustainability efforts in the local community

IKEA plans to launch a store in London's Greenwich area that will not only sell their usual affordable offerings, but also focus on building sustainability and the local community. The size will be similar to its other London stores but there will be new elements of the store that focus on creating a welcoming and sustainable environment.

The plan is to have a roof pavilion and biodiversity garden for anyone to enjoy. Furthermore, the store will host a number of community events. As for the building design, the store will harvest rainwater and utilize solar panels in order to efficiently utilize energy and resources. To encourage consumers to also be environmentally-conscious, there will be large spaces available for bikes and charging stations for electric cars. IKEA will actively encourage their employees and customers to utilize public transportation as well, lowering environmental impact. This is all part of IKEA's goal to engage with customers and the local community, while starting to focus on sustainable initiatives and goods.

Additionally, this new store will result in 500 new jobs being created, with a focus on hiring locals by working with local Greenwich labor groups. IKEA is actively pushing this plan to ensure that the local community benefits from the store in multiple ways. Big companies are known to extract from local communities, instead of benefiting them. Hopefully with their enormous resources, IKEA will differ from the norm and be a place that fosters good values.
