The Melbourne Jacket, currently on Kickstarter, imagines a garment ready to whatever weather conditions are thrown at it

Weather conditions vary around the world, from cities experiencing painfully hot summers, to blistering cold winters, though many of them take time to change. Melbourne, Australia, has a reputation for the weather changing from one season to another in minutes. Wanting to help residents of the area, Aaron Tyler pitched the concept of the Melbourne Jacket, ready to accommodate a wearer to various forms of weather.

To include everything a wearer would need to manage various forms of weather, a pouch was added to the back of the jacket. The pouch contains wearable gear to either make the jacket smaller for hotter days by pulling away the excess layers and turning it into a singlet, a legionnaires hat to protect against the sun, a military grade poncho for monsoon rains, and a pair of flipflops corded to the pouch. The wearer takes a few minutes to change what they currently have out to make it more comfortable for the current weather.

Not everything could fit into the pouch. The lining of the jacket also contains a few surprises, such as retractable gloves inside the sleeves, a ski mask along the back collar, and a battery-powered heating unit inside the jacket to keep the wearer warm. Additional items include an emergency dog coat, foodie bib, respirator for those who have trouble breathing in intense storms, and water-proof rain chaps.

Tyler wanted to have as much as possible in the Melbourne Jacket knowing the weather a resident of the city comes up against. Unlike other Kickstarter projects, Tyler does not have a working prototype of the jacket. The video Tyler posted to his crowdfunding project lists the items he wants to have in a single jacket. The funds in the project go toward researching the way to make these features possible, developing the prototype, testing the features, bringing together other creative collaborators for the project, and launching the concept to those who backed the Kickstarter.

The Kickstarter project is still in the funding phase, needing to reach A$12,000, before April 25.
