A partnership with wearable company WHOOP gives players more ownership over their data

Wearable device company WHOOP has partnered with the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) to give players the ability to make money out of their health data. NFL players will have easy access to, ownership of, and the option to commercialize their data.

The WHOOP Strap 2.0 will be distributed to NFL players so they can monitor their Strain, Recovery, and Sleep. This lightweight, waterproof and screen-less device is worn on either the wrist, forearm or upper arm. Its five sensors measure data 100 times per second and automatically transmit it to the WHOOP app for analysis and recommendations. WHOOP data has been shown to optimize training and recovery, correlate with in-game performance, and reduce injuries.

In the future, this partnership could lead to TV networks comparing the heart rates of star players, and determining which players’ bodies were better prepared for a game. NFL players will own and control the data collected with the WHOOP Strap 2.0, design custom licensed bands for the WHOOP Strap, and be able to commercialize their WHOOP data through the NFLPA’s group licensing program. The NFLPA and WHOOP will study the effects aspects like travel, sleep, scheduling and injuries have on recovery, and generate reports to improve player safety and maximize athletic performance.

Will Ahmed, founder and CEO at WHOOP, said in a press release:

“Our mission at WHOOP is to empower athletes. This partnership with the NFLPA is truly the first of its kind in that athletes will finally become both healthier and wealthier by collecting, controlling, and ultimately having the ability to sell their own health and performance data. We applaud the NFLPA’s vision and share its commitment to work with athletes to better monitor their recovery and enable longer careers.”
