Knops work mechanically to reduce real-world noise to very low levels

Sound can be a wonderful thing, but too much noise can mark the onset of migraines and hearing decay. Billed as an “acoustic hearing solution” that enables full control over the surrounding sounds you hear, this analog device lets you tune out crying babies aboard airplanes and loud neighbors, and can further let you enjoy concerts at your own volume setting. Otherwise known as Knops, these sound-dampening earbuds work mechanically (they’re strictly non-digital) to reduce noise across four differing level settings: clear sound (-0db), city noise (-10dB), live music (-20dB) and isolation (-30dB).

Having successfully launched a preliminary crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, the platform helped the young startup nab nearly 3,000 early-bird supports, raising a combined total of €258,707 ($283,000 USD). Now working to deliver on its promise, Knops are crafted in such a way that the shape fits snuggly in your ear, yet filters the optimal amount of sound for crystal clear hearing with minimal sound distortion. The team attests to working long hours making sure it delivers the best quality sound at every volume level.

With a careful eye for design, Knops come in several trims, of which you can select either a black or white gramophone, stainless steal or gold plated ring material, and smooth or ridged knurling. With the notion that visible products worn in everyday life should be stylish, the pieces are both fashionable and intuitive to use – simply turn the Knop a quarter-step to cycle through the various noise filters.

In this case, quality comes at a price—while similar off-the-shelf products exist in digital forms and are available for a mere $20 to $25, Knops’ early bird versions sold for between $62 to $117 USD (depending on materials selected), and are expected to rise in price after the first round of orders get shipped. As always, backing Kickstarter products is best left to discretionary judgment: if you can afford this device and have a strong need to focus or tune out respectively without the aid of music, then this may just be a worthy investment after all.
