The brand is looking to create more compelling original content for the platform

Audible, the largest producer of downloadable audiobooks in the world, just established a $5 million grant for people who write scripts. This comes at a time when online media sources (Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon’s very own Prime) are finding success in creating original content. Recently, fiction podcasts such as Night Vale, The Black Tapes, and Fruit, has renewed public interest in the format.

An influential advisory board including Annette Bening, Oskar Eustis, and Lynn Nottage will help turn scripts into actual podcasts. The announcement was made in a The New York Times report. According to it, a pioneer batch of 12 playwrights will be chosen. Audible CEO Donald Katz describes future recipients of the grant as artists who “who might otherwise be writing Off (or even Off Off) Broadway theaters.” How a theater experience translates into one that’s solely audible, we are still to find out.
