Canvas is a startup that wants recruiters to approach prospective employees through texts and emojis rather than voicemails

Canvas is a startup that seeks to change the job recruiting process, screening candidates through text conversations before proceeding to real life interviews. The startup capitalizes on millennials’ evident preference for communication over text rather than phone calls and voice mails.

Recruiters uses the Canvas app to access a portfolio of interview questions which they can send to prospective candidates (from describing your strengths and weaknesses, to describe yourself using emojis), and can privately mark up candidate responses with a thumb up, thumb down or follow up note. Recruiters can also send essential documents directly in app–like job or company descriptions, and view candidate profiles at a glance. When a candidate progresses to the next stage, recruiters keep access archived text messages.

“If every aspect of our life—booking a hotel, talking to colleagues, meeting our spouse—can be initiated with a text-based conversation,” Canvas founder Aman Brar told QZ, “why would talent be immune?”

Brar believes that Canvas allows for more efficient screening, and early clients are experimenting with the new process. Fees for clients range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars for month, depending on the numbers of recruiters using the app. It’s a long overdue innovation, according to HR thought leader and professor, Dr. John Sullivan, who raved of the many potential advantages of text-interviews in a blog post, including “a higher quality of hire, less bias, a lower cost per hire as a result of lower travel costs, a reduced environmental impact, an improved candidate experience, and a shorter time to fill.”
