BMW’s Newest Art Car Is An Augmented Reality Racing Machine
Artist Cao Fei mixed real and digital media, using a physical car with virtual colors floating above it
BMW unveiled a new BMW Art Car on May 31 at the Mingsheng Art Museum in Beijing. The car was designed by Cao Fei, a Chinese artist who focuses on chaotic works to reflect a constantly changing society in China. Fei is the first Chinese artist to be commissioned for a BMW Art Car project.
Fei’s piece combined a physical car with virtual colors seen through an augmented reality application. These robust colors change and float above the matte black car, as if the idea of a car transcends the physical manifestation of what people normally expect from it.
Fei’s work for BMW includes three parts: a video, an augmented reality component viewable in the complementary app, and the physical car.
