In Brief

Jaguar Land Rover has released a new augmented reality advertisement that puts people behind the wheel of the Range Rover Velar SUV

Jaguar Land Rover launched a new banner ad that gives customers the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the company’s latest vehicle, the Range Rover Velar SUV, using augmented reality with a smartphone camera. The technology was developed by Blippar, a London-based AR startup, and Mindshare North America.

When viewers click on the advertisement, their phone screen drops them into the driver’s seat of the new car. A user can see the rest of the car by holding their phone up and moving it around 360 degrees. A prompt then asks if the viewer would “like to see the world from the perspective of the car,” which shows the immediate surroundings behind the windows. The banner does not require an outside app.

The AR advertisement operates on Chrome and Firefox desktop browsers and on Android phones. The Velar car will be released in August.
