A stretchy golden wearable could make it easier for doctors to monitor their patients, even after they return home

According to a Nature Nanotechnology paper, a group of scientists were able to create a wearable that fit onto someone’s skin so comfortably that it feels like it’s a part of the body. This wearable could subsequently assist the medical industry, as patients could take this wearable home with them.

The wearable started out as a mesh material wrapped around circuits called polyvinyl alcohol, a substance used in contact lenses. Inside the mesh, scientists created charged electrical threads, a technique commonly referred to as electrospinning, that was then coated in gold to make the equipment more conductive. The mesh fits over the wearer’s skin and washes away with water, leaving behind gold electrical threads on the skin. According to the paper, the scientists got 20 participants to use the wearable for over a week and none of them encountered any problems. In fact, some of them forgot they even had it in.

Scientists hope to use this type of wearable for long-term medical monitoring when a patient must return home, but still needs to have their vitals monitored.
