Howz, an app that is capable of custom tailoring to each user’s needs, aims to make caring for aging relatives a less arduous task by incorporating home monitoring technology in the place of bulky wearables or invasive devices.

Instead of requiring the elderly family member in question to strap on a wearable device, the app connects to existing systems, like an electricity meter or a home thermostat, and tracks daily patterns in order to alert caregivers when something seems off.

“We needed something that didn’t require a huge effort [on the part of the user],” Louise Rogerson, the company’s director of service development, told Mashable. “That’s where the combination of movement, daily routine, etc. comes in—that’s the key indicator for me, as a therapist, when somebody is starting to have a problem. Way before I see anything else, I see that.”

The app might prove particularly useful for caregivers of people suffering from early-stage dementia, as the machine learning and analytics it employs could help identify warning signs in the form of behavioral changes before they start to cause major problems or pose safety issues.

The Howz system components include a door sensor, which can inform caregivers when a door is opened or closed, and a sensor that monitors temperature and light levels. Howz’s machine learning capabilities also allow it to keep track of the daily routine of an individual, detecting when something is amiss and then alerting a relative accordingly.

The app’s creators hope that the system will eventually become commonplace in thousands of houses as a way to ensure the elderly members of society are safe and well in their homes.
