Newly hired specialists at Raley's supermarkets mark one of many programs the company has undertaken to promote wellness and sustainability

Raley’s, a family-owned chain of supermarkets located in northern California and Nevada, has steadily introduced healthier options for shoppers to put a wider variety of colors and choices on their plates. Now the company has started hiring ‘wellness specialists’ to advise employees and customers about wellness and sustainability.

Over the past two years, Raley’s has pushed to improve the variety of healthy foods available in its stores through various initiatives. These include stocking only cage-free eggs and removing private-label brand sodas containing artificial colors and flavors. The supermarket announced earlier this month that it plans to make the seafood it sells exclusively sustainable. To take a more direct approach with customers, Raley’s introduced the wellness specialists to its aisles.

Wellness specialists roam the store to answer any food-related questions customers may have before purchasing an item, from the vitamins a food contains to the gluten-free options available in the store. Though the wellness specialist recommends specific foods for a customer to include in their diet, they never enforce or tell customers what they should not eat. The position was created to educate customers on their food options, not to discourage their food habits. One of the first wellness specialist hires, Ben Barreda, graduated from Sacramento State University with a degree in nutrition.

The chain started another health-based program with its ‘Let’s Begin’ campaign, which focuses on educating customers at home through online articles. The articles focus on informing readers about how the vegetables from a farm get processed before they arrive on the shelf, what ingredients to use to make an ideal salad, chopping techniques to effectively cut vegetables and healthy recipes.

Raley’s updates have come about as more customers seek to purchase organic and locally grown foods.
