YouTube Debuts Its Own Typeface Called YouTube Sans

The newly designed font is meant to give the video platform a typographic identity of its own

When Google debuted its own font Product Sans in 2015, it helped the company’s branding become more uniform across its array of different properties. Now YouTube is doing just the same with the introduction of YouTube Sans, a unique font that will be used across the platform’s growing number of services.

Developed by branding agency Saffron in collaboration with YouTube’s UX team, YouTube Sans is designed to express a uniquely YouTube aesthetic that combines the user-friendly world of YouTube with the bold, freewheeling world of cinema and entertainment that the company is rapidly expanding into. The font was developed specifically with YouTube TV in mind, and was debuted earlier this year during YouTube TV’s launch event in Los Angeles.

“It is slightly quirky and expressive, but also simple and bold, just like the platform it calls home,” said Saffron in a press release. “It will bring brand recognition to a wide variety of digital and non-digital environments.”

The letterforms are influenced by the rounded ‘play button’ shape, with curved edges contrasted with angular cuts inspired by the arrow. Additionally, the font family includes light, medium, and bold weights to offer a broad range of uses, and has been digitally optimized to be read at both large and small screen sizes. The YouTube logo itself has also been turned into a glyph that can be typed from a keyboard.
