Audi Is Developing Solar Panels To Power New Electric Vehicles
The German auto brand is hoping to pave the way for better engineered electric cars
Electric cars are definitely the future of the auto industry. Besides being better for the environment, they can be a cheaper alternative to fuel cars. But gathering energy can be a problem. It takes time for car batteries to charge, and we are not at a place yet where electric cars can charge up at any gas station. Audi wants to change this by building thin solar panels to put on its vehicles. The solar cells will be used to provide electricity for internal functions like seat heaters and air conditioning.
“The range of electric cars plays a decisive role for our customers. Together with Alta Devices and Hanergy, we plan to install innovative solar technology in our electric cars that will extend their range and is also sustainable,” Audi Board of Management Member for Procurement Dr. Bernd Martens said in a press release. Should solar energy later be enabled to charge the car battery directly, “That would be a milestone along the way to achieving sustainable, emission-free mobility.”
Audi is investing in solar panels that have the power to collect energy even when the sun is not brightly shining. This innovative solar technology allows electric cars to go longer without charging, while being a guaranteed sustainable source of energy. The first prototype is expected by the end of this year.
