Inspire wants to help customers go green and pay a fixed amount no matter how much they consume

A startup called Inspire is changing the way homeowners pay for electricity. With Inspire, more American homes can be wholly powered by wind energy and the best part: it can come with a fixed price which means no more bill shock.

How Inspire works is only a bit more complicated than wiring up your home to a wind farm. When doing the switch, the companies responsible for bringing the electricity to the home remains. Only the provider of the actual charge that runs through the wires changes.

Inspire might still use traditional sources of electricity (coal, natural gas, etc) to power up your home. However, with every megawatt-hour used, Inspire will purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) for offsetting. RECs are made every time a renewable power plant (in this case, mostly wind farms), generate a megawatt of energy. This means every watt-hour used from the grid by an Inspire-enabled home will be replaced by electricity from greener sources.

Inspire does offer a unique fixed-rate pricing, but the exact rate is determined by individual analysis. A home’s past usage, the number of people in the house as well as square-footage are all factors that determine the fixed price. But it’s not the only option. There are also variable plans and subscription plans. Because the pricing structure can be a bit tricky, Inspire’s support team will have a “Look Ahead” service. This lets clients predict what their bill will be before the month-end.

According to Fast Company, there is a chance people will pay less for Inspire with fixed charges going as low as $59. With average residential bills in the US reaching over $100, this can be a very alluring offer. As of press time, Inspire is available in the following states and only in specific zip codes: Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Ohio.

The shift to renewable has been a big goal for many including the US, but the road towards that has been especially challenging. But startups that are making the switch easy are definitely helping. Fortunately, many consumers in the US are on the same emission-free boat. Pew Research Center surveys say 65% of adult Americans prefer alternative energy over fossil fuels.
