Green Screen covers annoying ads with vibrant flower patterns

The popularity of ad blockers makes it pretty clear that people hate seeing ads on the pages they visit, but what if instead of replacing ads with a bunch of white space, they could be replaced with something beautiful and inspiring?

That’s the idea behind Green Screen, a free extension for Google Chrome that hides banner ads behind walls of beautiful flower illustrations. Created by The Green Gallery, an online magazine commissioned by the Flower Council of Holland, the illustration are the works of top artists and designers including Henk Schiffmacher, Geraldine Wharry, Loco Dice x Hoxxoh, and the design brand Pigalle.

“Research shows that people increasingly want to block online ads. So why not use that space to be inspired?” asks the magazine on their website. The idea for the extension was born from research that shows the mood-improving effects real flowers have on humans, including reducing stress. Though there’s no proof yet if digital flowers will have the same effect, those who are interested in trying can download the extension for free through Green Gallery’s website.
