Protanopia mixes together 2D animation with 3D for an interactive comic that expands with a tilt of your tablet

Digital artist André Bergs created a digital comic book called Protanopia that mixes together 2D animation with 3D. The app works with interaction from the user. The user swipes from left to right to go to the next strip and tapping on a single panel focuses on that one area. Each panel first appears like a 2D colored comic, but as the iPad tilts from side to side the strip comes to life in 3D to expand past the panel’s original borders.

Bergs created Protanopia in a game engine to have all of the panels consistently moving throughout the experience, such as water splashing against a boat or a man bracing for impact as the boat speeds away. Protanopia is available to download for free for iOS and Android.

Bergs states on his website that he made Protanopia to experiment with a comic strip for the modern age.
