Casa Fengchao promises to help China's elite move further forward in life

Ventures promising self-improvement are common but “common” isn’t exactly how you would describe this club in China. Casa Fengchao is a club for the ultra-rich where they can enjoy leisure and a whole host of opportunities to improve themselves in an exclusive setting. An odd mix of Western and Eastern values, this new invite-only clubhouse is the brainchild of Sarah Jane Ho.

Sarah Jane Ho hails from Hong Kong and has built a career remaking Western traditions of opulence to fit the tastes of the East. Educated at a finishing school in Switzerland, Sarah Jane Ho built Institute Sarita, a school offering courses to improve the etiquette of affluent Chinese women following a mix of both Western and Eastern standards. The school has been popular with China’s elite, with 12-day courses costing $15,000 per student.

Casa Fengchao sits on 8 Juer Hutong in Beijing in a glamorous 1875 European-style mansion. It was built by Rong Lu, a military and political leader who was related to the last Emperor of China. Once a welcoming facade to visiting businessmen and foreigners, the heritage site will continue to serve its purpose as a venue for society’s top tier.

The top floor is a members-only spa where guests can unwind. The other rooms will be venues for interactions. According to the currently sparse Casa Fengchao website, the home will be the perfect catalyst for the “sharing resources, access, capital, and ideas so that members can create and shape our future together.”

In the West, opulence is often a brand, flaunted and written about in tabloids. In this part of the world, clubs like this one offer the rich some privacy to enjoy their lives and conduct business.
