Experimental Perfume Club helps companies develop sensory marketing

Experimental Perfume Club (EPC) is a London-based creative studio and micro lab specializing in bespoke perfumes for brands and individuals. Founded last year, the company’s mission is to make fragrance creation and knowledge more accessible to the general public. To do this, EPC opens its lab to the public for workshops. These workshops help deconstruct the world of perfume, exploring and educating on topics that include the art, logic, science and secrets behind fragrances so participants create signature scents of their own.

For companies, EPC offers consultancy services that help brands tell their unique story through scent. Each company is paired directly with a dedicated perfumer to create a fragrance that matches their vision. The studio is capable of producing small or large batches of the new scent, depending on a client’s needs.

So far, EPC has worked in step with branding agencies looking to propose innovative concepts to clients in the coffee and automotive industries. “This is what I love about scent marketing,” EPC Creative Director and Perfumer Emmanuelle Moeglin tells PSFK. “Fragrance is no longer reserved for beauty brands. For a car manufacturer, we worked on recreating the smells of old cars. This was used as a way to link the past and future and recreate nostalgic memories through smell for the launch of their new concept car.”

The work is part of an emerging trend of sensory marketing, a powerful tool for brands to share their message and engage with customers beyond visual means.

As Moeglin explains:

Brands are increasingly looking outside traditional visual and sound advertising. Creating multi-sensory experiences and using scent as a way to embody a brand or a message is a growing area in branding. This is a concept that has been pushed by the rise of multi-sensory exhibitions and museums which are looking to present perfume beyond its traditional bottled format and more as a way to interact with people.

EPC also offers team-building experiences where groups can learn how their sense of smell compares to the others and create new fragrances.
