Paris-based AccorHotels is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week, and it has plenty in store. Along with providing excellent service to those who stay in its rooms, it is now opening its doors to the people who serve their communities on a daily basis. They want to connect hardworking individuals with the best services in their neighborhoods.

The hotel group recently tested its AccorLocal pilot, which has evolved into an app that will allow users to access not only AccorHotels properties, but also local merchants and service venues with a single tap.

“For the past 50 years, millions of customers around the world have trusted AccorHotels’ hospitality expertise,” Sébastien Bazin, chairman and CEO of AccorHotels, said in a press release. “When they go through the door of one of our hotels, they can be certain of finding, at any time of day, a customized service offered by more than 250,000 people who are passionate about our unique savoir-faire in the field of hospitality and service. We have now chosen to make this unparalleled wealth available to benefit community life by developing an unprecedented model, creating social connections and value for small businesses, local communities and staff members at our hotels.”

The AccorLocal app will help tourists become more familiar with the city they’re visiting. The service will provide everyday solutions for their guests, including locating storage facilities for securely holding items, booking fitness classes, ordering flowers, having dry cleaning delivered and more.

Hotels on the service get to choose the local merchants and services they want to feature for their guests. AccorHotels has also developed several partnerships with local businesses and key brands like Pampa and Bergamoote, a major florist in France, Nespresso coffee brand and Hertz rental car agency.

Along with servicing the massive tourist community, AccorLocal is also good for locals. In France, especially, it’s apparently taboo to walk into a hotel where you’re not a guest there, and AccorLocal shows non-guests what services are available to them. They learn that they can enter hotels to consume a good or service, even if they aren’t staying there. They also have a unique resource that connects them with local goods and services. They might book spa services, go swimming, use the fitness room, find co-working spaces, order takeout, use the computers or utilize a variety of other services available to everyone for a fee.

Although the service is free to its users, AccorLocal makes money on commission. Anytime someone uses the app to purchase goods or services with a local vendor, they receive anywhere from 10 to 20% of the profits from the transaction.

There’s also an underlying loyalty program within the app so that members can benefit even more from using the service. They’ll create a profile and gain points for the services they use. In the future, the company hopes to integrate the two services so that the loyalty program is good for both AccorLocal and AccorHotels.

As of now, AccorLocal has more than 3,000 active users and 250 participating hotels in 42 cities across France, and is opening the service to the rest of Europe in 2018. By 2019, the company hopes to have extended the service around the world.
