Barking dogs, loud traffic and snoring sleep partners are no match for these noise-canceling earbuds

Cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes are just some of the numerous health conditions that have been scientifically linked to poor sleep, and it was with these problems in mind that audio equipment manufacturer Bose designed Sleepbuds, the company’s first wellness product for better sleep.

Created to protect the wearer’s sleep from unwanted, disruptive noises, Bose’s Sleepbuds are based on technology from a small an Diego-based startup called Hush, which in 2016 was crowdfunding a similar noise-canceling earbud product when it was acquired by Bose. Utilizing the noise-blocking technologies from Hush and Bose’s long-standing expertise in audio hardware, the two teams were able to create a refined version of the product that has now become Sleepbuds.

As opposed to traditional earphones that simply block out noise by filling the ear cavity, the Sleepbuds are based on the concept of sound masking, which works by matching the sound frequency of other, nearby sounds to effectively cancel out or “mask” the distracting noise. This makes the buds ideal for people who live in noisy neighborhoods or who have a snoring partner sleeping next to them.

What makes the buds particularly appealing is that Bose has been able to fit the technology into a form factor that is tiny, comfortable and stable for wearers so that it doesn’t further distract them during sleep. The tips of the earbuds, for instance, were specifically deigned with the knowledge that most people sleep with their face in a pillow, and are thus are durable yet soft enough to withstand the pressure of a person’s skull while at the same time not causing discomfort.

The Soundbuds work with an accompanying Bose Sleep App, which lets users schedule wake up alarms, adjust the volume and pick which noise masking sounds they prefer, including relaxing options like “ocean waves” and “waterfall.” The product also comes with a neat all-in-one style charging case that stores the buds inside the case. The buds can last two full nights on a single charge, and also come with adjustable ear tips so that each person can find the right fit for themselves.

Bose is currently looking for feedback and taking pre-orders on the product through an Indiegogo campaign, which as of this writing has already raised 892% of its original $50,000 goal. Bose says it sees the Sleepbuds as a way to redefine itself beyond the realm of entertainment and into wellness.

“I really believe that, with the solution to this really massive problem, we’re going to change millions of people’s lives,” said Brian Mulcahey, Bose Director of Emerging Business. Currently the Sleepbuds have sold out through the Indiegogo website, with the first deliveries expected to be made starting in February 2018.
