New features will help users understand what to expect and how to orient themselves in a rental before they arrive

Hospitality service Airbnb is looking at new ways to improve the experience for their community. The two areas they are most interested in are virtual reality before a trip and augmented reality during it. Virtual reality could enable people to connect with their destination, host, and co-travelers. 360-degree photos and 3D scans would let them step inside a home or city to understand what to expect and how to orient themselves before they leave home.

Augmented reality could be used to help immerse travelers in a new place, enabling them to recognize surroundings by providing contextual and timely information. For example, directions to where the coffee mugs are stored or instant translations on how to work a German thermostat. Airbnb are continuing to test use cases, prototype and hack before they introduce these new features for guests.
