In Brief

The social media app is playing a bigger role than most people expect

The wildfires in South California continue to spread, causing what ABC News reports is an estimated 150,000 Los Angeles residents alone evacuating the area. With all the unpredictability, there needs to be a reliable source of information to help people stay safe during this time. Surprisingly enough, Snapchat is becoming an important tool for residents in the area. Along with some intense photos uploaded on the platform, Snapchat users are also using the platform’s new feature, Snap Map, to map out the fires.

Launched in June, Snap Map allows users to see popular areas where there are many story uploads. As users continue to snap pictures and videos of the fire, it is a good way to chronicle this disaster. More users end up submitting information and Snapchat has the ability to collect and share this visual data. In a dire situation, it is undoubtedly a way to get important information in real-time.
