The race to bring a level-four autonomous vehicle to market advanced further with news from General Motors. The automaker filed a safety petition with the Department of Transportation for deployment of its fourth-generation self-driving Bolt EV under the Cruise AV name. The plan looks to establish Cruise AV as an autonomous ridesharing service accessed through a smartphone.

GM bought Cruise Automation in 2016; the company formerly produced and sold an aftermarket autopilot driving system for recent Audi vehicles. The Cruise AV could be the first production vehicle built with no manual controls like a steering wheel or pedals.

The Cruise AV is part of GM’s vision to move the world toward using zero emission vehicles and eliminating accidents and traffic congestion. GM has been testing a fleet of nearly 200 autonomous Bolts around San Francisco, Scottsdale and Detroit for a couple of years. GM has yet to specify a date for when the service could begin.
