PSFK researchers look at artificial intelligence's growing role in healthcare for needs like scheduling and patient communication

In recent years it has become evident that AI is having a sizable impact on the way patients receive health care, as well as how professionals administer that care. For example, medical practitioners and patients are using AI-driven self-scheduling and smart calendar software to schedule appointments, conversational assistants to diagnose and prescribe medicines, and virtual platforms for remote consultations.

PSFK researchers took a closer look at how technology is evolving the patient experience and how these advancements can provide additional insights into ways that retailers are using scheduling software to optimize staffing for improved customer experiences.

These technologies are no longer fringe or extreme cases; in fact, Sandhya Pruthi, MD, Associate Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic, commented on how they are impacting patient care today: “Voice-enabled experience is a new and growing channel for reaching people and delivering information they are seeking, whether or not they have an existing relationship with Mayo Clinic.”

As part of a larger trend we are calling ‘Self-Scheduling,’ PSFK researchers exlpored how new technologies are seamlessly onboarding patients and connecting them to the right doctors and medical practitioners through voice-based activations and mobile or digital platforms. Here are a few of what we think are the most interesting ways these advancements are being implemented:

CCA + Penn Medicine
Commonwealth Care Alliance and Penn Medicine are developing voice-interaction AI technologies that can be used for scheduling appointments, prescription refills, reminders and alerts. They have built two prototypes using Amazon Echo that tailor individualized care regimes, with the goal of exploring how the technology can be used reshare the patient experience.

MTBC
MTBC’s patient engagement solution CareConnector streamlines and enhances all patient interactions from scheduling to checking-in at the front desk, to post-encounter communication and billing.

Stericycle
Global services company Stericycle developed online self-scheduling software InQuicker to enable patients to seamlessly make appointments using real-time data on the digital scheduling platform. The software supports strategies around patient acquisition and retention, patient experience and satisfaction, care coordination, operational efficiency.

Cerner
Healthcare information technology company Cerner’s patient portal solution, HealtheLifeSM, allows patients to schedule an appointment via the web-based solution. By enabling interaction and engagement between health organizations and people, the software combines the traditional features of a patient portal with added engagement tools for people to proactively manage their health.

Helium
Helium Healthcare is an all-in-one healthcare solution built for communities in Africa to seamlessly onboard patients, schedule appointments and manage medical records within seconds.

When patients have these services at their fingertips, it lowers the barrier to entry for diagnosis and receiving medical care. From the perspective of providers, offloading a large portion of logistics and management to artificial intelligence means that doctors can spend more time focusing on providing high quality and meaningful care, and ultimately see more patients.
