A new smart oven from Whirlpool helps home cooks follow recipes and integrates with voice assistants

Not everyone has skills in the kitchen, but Whirlpool thinks technology can make meals easier for hapless home cooks. The appliance maker launched a smart oven and microwave that connect over Wi-Fi to recipe app Yummly. It will also work with voice commands through Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Once a user starts working on a Yummly recipe, the Whirlpool oven automatically preheats when it needs to. After the raw ingredients are loaded, the oven will start the timer, following the instructions specified on the Yummly app. Yummly, a startup that Whirlpool acquired last year, helps home cooks save on waste by helping them find recipes to match whatever is in the fridge.

As a connected home isn’t complete without the opportunity to talk to machines, both the Whirlpool oven and microwave are voice-activated. Homeowners can either use Alexa or Google Assistant to check a recipe’s status, pick cooking modes and activate other features.
