Coca-Cola partnered with mobile payment app Alipay for an augmented reality campaign that gives customers a special gift for the Chinese New Year

Coca-Cola has a pair of traditional clay dolls who help promote the arrival of Chinese New Year, and this year the brand added an augmented reality element through a partnership with mobile payment platform Alipay.

Using the Alipay app, a customer can scan the QR code to purchase a bottle of Coke. Coca-Cola decided to take this process one step further by allowing users to scan the clay doll figures on the bottle label to animate them in AR. The characters perform a brief series of antics, from hugging each other to having a snowball fight. At the end of the animation, a red envelope arrives on screen for the user to open for a surprise gift of .1 to 99 renminbi (1 cent to $15.50—referencing a Chinese New Year tradition of giving red envelopes of cash. The amount goes to the user’s Alipay account for them to use however they wish.
