Coord aims to empower cities to encourage ridesharing and reduce curbside congestion

Coord is a platform that hopes to make it easier for companies creating digital navigation tools to integrate real-time information to facilitate smoother transportation for customers. Backed by Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs, whose aim is to improve the quality of life in cities, Coord provides software developers with access to APIs (code that is easy for other computer systems to talk to) for data on tolls, curbs and parking in cities across the U.S., with more options like bike share to come.

Acting as a coordination system for new mobility services, navigation tool and urban infrastructure, Coord is hoping to be a solution to urban mobility challenges. The platform will help a ride-hail service reduce curbside congestion by locating legal pick-up and drop-off zones, in addition to helping users see all of their transportation options including carsharing services with toll costs included.

Digital navigation tools will be equipped to let people know the real-time options and prices across all travel modes. Options will be organized based on cost, travel time, environmental impact and other measures that are most important to user. Currently urban mobility data exists across many different owners with no real motivation to share information with each other. This presents a challenge to mobility companies that want to deliver a seamless, multi-modal trip experience that is scalable across cities. Coord aims to enable communication across companies with its standardized system and access to information about the whole industry.

In addition to a more seamless service experience Coord is hoping to inspire companies and cities to work together to make better use of existing resources. For example, Coord is hoping to provide drivers who are looking for a parking spot with information on parking availability, prices and rules for all nearby public streets so that time is not wasted on circling for parking which creates a significant amount of congestion on city streets.
