Cyclists can fix a flat tire and enjoy a flat white coffee in the same space

The onset of spring in New York City means many cyclists will emerge from winter hibernation and have their first rides of the year. It is a particularly busy season for bike shops performing post-winter storage tune ups. An alternative for the mechanically inclined is a recently opened cafe in Brooklyn that has a free bike service area.

Maglia Rosa NYC opened its second location at Industry City in late fall of 2017. The new location is divided between the bike service area and a cafe with counter and table seating. Their first shop is a short distance away in Carroll Gardens and houses a custom bike building workshop, retail space and small cafe.

The bike service area has two floor mounted work stands with tools attached that are free to use. There are also tire pumps and a vending machine stocked with common bike parts like inner tubes and brake pads. Maglia Rosa sells its own branded cycling gear, including jerseys, hats and bottles, and a selection of cycling-related books. There’s an indoor rack for cyclists to hang their bikes on while stopping by for a coffee or snack.

Some of the cafe’s custom-built bikes are displayed above the counter, plus a few vintage models. The space is nicely designed and feels more more like a retro Italian cafe than a grungy bike shop. Wraparound windows let in a lot of light and make the space feel comfortable.

The cafe serves breakfast and lunch, including vegetarian and vegan options. They also stock energy and power bars for cyclists needing to take some food on the road.

Maglia Rosa’s Industry City cafe has cyclists in mind but the food offer and design of the space doesn’t alienate people looking for a good coffee and food spot. A bike workshop and cafe might sound like an odd pairing, but here it works.
