This Android keyboard suggests words and swaps phrases to call attention to the gendered language that undermines girls

To combat the large amount of messaging out in the world that makes girls question their self-worth, humanitarian organization Plan International created a special kind of Android keyboard. Called Sheboard, the tool provides options for more empowering word suggestions whenever a user is typing up anything related to women and girls.

For example, if you type in the word “women,” one of the top words the keyboard suggests is “lead.” Other words that may pop up include “strong,” “rule,” “smart,” and “athletic.” The keyboard can even can change certain phrases that girls often hear. For example, “my little princess” becomes “my awesome adventurer.”

Plan International wants to change the language that we use to describe young girls because it believes it can improve their self-esteem. The organization is encouraging family members to install the keyboard and reconsider the gendered language they use. It is available for download here.
