The Financial Gym follows a fitness club model, with coaches who help clients achieve their money goals though personalized plans

After working as a financial advisor for years at Merrill Lynch, Shannon McLay wanted to venture out to help people financially, but with more personal emphasis on the client. So she opened The Financial Gym, a physical location in Chelsea, Manhattan, where people can go to receive one-on-one training with a professional to help achieve their financial dreams.

While there are countless books and articles offering money advice, The Financial Gym believes that financial success can be achieved much more easily through the personal approach of a coach. It works much like the fitness trainer model: financial coaches listen to a customer’s goals and tailor a plan for attaining them. The coaches keep clients accountable while also providing a support system.

Plans to join The Financial Gym start at $85 per month, providing a slew of offerings for clients including a one-hour meeting to set goals with a trainer, a second meeting to go over a financial plan, quarterly check-ins, the freedom to reach out to the trainer as needed and access to an online spend-tracking portal. There are numerous perks for members, such as all-day access to Financial Gym locations and unlimited beer, wine and snacks. The group also holds Wine & Learns—Wednesday evening educational events that stem from the idea that “money is more interesting with a glass of wine in hand.”

When all is said and done, what keeps people coming back to The Financial Gym is that it truly is different. The coaching element provides people with great feedback, positivity and a complete lack of judgment. And there are the results: according to the company, 90% of its clients say that they achieve their financial goals.
